About Us

Made in India, to a standard set in Europe.

For three decades, the workshop behind Blak Sand has made shoes for Europe's largest fashion houses — three and a half million pairs a year, to a specification that does not forgive shortcuts. Blak Sand is what that workshop makes when the brief is its own.

The skins

We buy hides where they are best, not where they are near. Calf from European, Brazilian and Argentinian wet blue. Goat suede from Burkina Faso, which produces the finest kid suede in the world. Hair sheep from Ethiopia and South Africa, for the lamb Nappa on the upper and the lambskin inside. Every skin is tanned in Gold-rated Leather Working Group tanneries — the highest environmental rating the industry gives, and the one the European houses insist on.

The build

Aniline lamb Nappa, dyed through and never coated, so it deepens with wear. Soft KID suede with a nap that writes to the touch. Metal leathers that crease to catch the light, hand zardozi set with metal discs, leather braided by hand. Underfoot, four millimetres of memory foam over three of latex, then lambskin against the skin. Heels wrapped in Italian leather veneer; stilettos flared at the base for balance. Shoes supple enough to fold in one hand, and built so you never will.

The hands

Designed in India with a French and a Spanish designer on the team. Cut, stitched, painted and finished by people who have done it for twenty years and notice a hair's difference in a nap.

We don't sell shoes as masterpieces. We make them properly and let you decide.
